Se Llamará Su Nombre Admirable, Consejero, Dios Fuerte

Mi Familia,

Thanks for the emails! It is good to hear from you even though we talked on Saturday. It was nice to talk for so long and hear from everyone. Oh and Mom, I thanked the Hermana for letting me use the phone and she was so nice about it. I hope everyone had a good Christmas even if they were sick in bed! I had a good day. We went to church (all 3 hours), we went to eat, and then my companion talked to his family. President made a deal with my companion that if he fixed everything in his school and at home my comp would stay here in the mission for his last transfer. President did it and he is staying here. I am glad because he is a good Elder and I will be able to learn more from him.

I am also almost completely sure that I will stay here the full 2 years, stay at home, and then start school in the spring. I thought about it a lot yesterday when my companion was talking with his family, weighing out options and seeing what would happen. I am not positive so I am going to keep praying. I would definitely work at home and study in the summer too I think. We will see what happens. Would you have to tell BYU?

Well I don't know if I have too much more to say because we talked less than 2 days ago. Haha - oh I read the article that Grandma sent about the Tzotziles. It is a great article and I didn't know about a lot of that stuff that it said. I know Elder and Sister Utt. They are awesome; they worked with an Elder that was living with us when he didn't have a companion. They drove us in their car to our area and made us laugh a lot. I also know a lot of Elders that have worked or are currently in the Tzotzil Zone. My comp was actually there for a short time and he has taught me a little. It is amazing to see that the gospel is being brought to many nations tongues and people.

I am happy and enjoyed Christmas time. I want to share my testimony of the Lord. I know that he was born more than 2000 years ago to Mary. I know that He was a great teacher, healer, and friend and still is. But I also testify that He was more than that. I know that He is literally the Savior of the world. He loves us, and still lives. He has eyes that see us, ears that hear us, and a mouth that talks to us.

The whole internet cafe lost connection when I was about to send the email so I couldn't send it last week, (this is it) sorry!!

"Pero Confiad; Yo He Vencido Al Mundo"

Mi Familia,

Hey this week was great. So the good news is that there is no limit on the phone call! President only said that he doesn't want us to talk literally all day. It is the best gift I could ask for, so I will talk to you Saturday at 1 your time. I don't have too much to say because we will be talking in a few days.

We had the baptism of Dana Paula on Saturday. In the morning we emptied the font with buckets because the water only drains to a certain point and then it stays there. It was fun, but took a while. Then we filled it up which takes a whopping 4 hours, but we went out to teach a few people, and had the baptism in the afternoon. A lot of people came, mostly family that are not members of the church, and it was a great experience. I felt the spirit very strongly.

Grandma mentioned that they are translating the temple ceremony to tzotzil (an indian dialect). I would like to read the article or a little more information! My companion right now had some time in an area that spoke tzotzil and learned a little.

This week I studied a lot about the atonement of Jesus Christ. I learned so much. I am so grateful that He suffered for us. I know that He lived a perfect life and that He lives now. I know that prayer is so important and powerful. When Christ had to suffer all things, He was praying and asking help from our Father. I know that he overcame all of the horrors of Satan, and that He lives and loves us.

I love you and miss you. Talk to you on Saturday! Merry Christmas!

Si No Sois Uno, No Sois Míos

Mi Familia,

This week was great. I had a great birthday!!! I did get the packages on Tuesday. We had a great zone conference. I learned a lot about faith. And also about "spiderwebs" of missionary work. For example, "the members don't help", or "no baptisms there", or "the bishop is no good", etc. President said we need to get rid of them, work, and have faith. I loved something that he taught. He said difficulties can be seen as stumbling blocks or steps of progress. It is so true, and we need to see our difficulties as a form of eternal progression. They refine us. We had a great meal and sang Christmas carols and had activities. Thanks for the packages, they were amazing! I was so excited for the ties and socks. Thanks so much!!! On my birthday I got another tie from an investigator, a wallet from members, and also a carne asada dinner from my companion. It was a great day. The President and his wife also called me to wish me a happy birthday, and many members told me happy birthday too.

This week was filled with some awesome things. Yesterday we saw a part of the Annual Ciudad Hidalgo Tricycle Race. It was so sweet, they take 5 laps around the whole city. I have never seen a tricycle go so fast. Also, a family we are teaching told me that they have a house in Acapulco, and told me that I can go and visit when I get home from the mission. I want to go with Dad, and the whole family! But Dad because he served there on his mission.

Also yesterday we went to the house of other investigators to take them to church, when we saw a police car outside taking them away. We told them they should have gone to church! But it turns out that a neighbor started fighting with one of them. They are home now with little harm. I think they are going to go to church next week.

We have another investigator that told us a few weeks ago that she didn't believe that Joseph Smith was a prophet. On Friday we had a lesson with her, and she told us that she had been reading about Joseph in a book of her brother-in-law (he is serving his mission in Guadalajara right now). She had a dream about him and told us that she knows he was a prophet and that he restored the true church. She wants to get baptized but isn't married, so we are going to have to keep working with her.

This week I studied about the importance of "one." The Lord said that if we are not one, we are not His. I am sure that Jesus is the Christ because he did the will of the Father, that is why they are one. I also found that Zion, the City of Enoch, was one in heart I think it says, and that when Christ came the the Americas He came to bring His other sheep, to make them one fold having one shepherd. It says in 4th Nephi that there were no -ites, or divisions. Division=Destruction. If we want to be like Christ, we have to do His will. What we do is who we are. I know Christ did the will of the Father, perfectly.

I love you and miss you, until next week!

Los Insectos También Abrumarán Sus Tierras

Mi Familia,

Thanks for all of the birthday wishes! I feel so loved. I know it will be a great birthday. We are going to have a zone conference tomorrow so I think I will get my mail but who knows. This week was really good. I learned a lot and had some great experiences.

First, we found a scorpion in the house this week! We killed it and it did no harm. It reminded me of Dad's mission story when they killed a scorpion in his house. I always thought that was the craziest story and wondered how a scorpion could get into the house, but I got to find out more by experience. Also the story about when dad's comp pegged the dog in the head with a rock, but I have lived that many times.

This week we got a referral for a 9 year old girl named Dana Paula, but she likes to be called Pali. Her parents are members, but less actives. The family came to church on sunday and Pali is so excited to get baptized, if everything turns out well she will be baptized on the 17th by her dad.

We had some great lessons this week. We have really been helping our investigators and not just teaching them what we know. I have felt so thankful for the opportunity I have had to serve the Lord in His work.

This week I have studied a little about the second coming. I really have a strong belief that the second coming is going to come very, very soon. We need to be ready by keeping the commandments. Also by searching for the signs so we know when Christ will come again. I think it was Joseph Fielding Smith who said that many living in the world would see the second coming of the Lord. I don't know when he said it, but he died in 1972. So it has to be right around the corner.

I am really happy, and hope everything is good. I love you guys and want to thank you for your support.

Heres a good Christmas scripture, "Ho, ho, come forth, and flee from the land of the north, saith the Lord: for I have spread you abroad as the four winds of the heaven, saith the Lord." -Zechariah 2:6... Santa lives.

Los Hombres Son Libres Para Escoger La Libertad Y La Vida Eterna

Mi Familia,

This week was the shortest in the mission. I can't believe how fast time is passing! Things are good here in Ciudad Hidalgo.

This week wasn't as hot, or maybe I am just getting used to it. It is so hot and humid that you sweat just sitting. I am used to it though. I drink a lot of water. People are starting to decorate their houses for Christmas. It makes me really happy, and then confused because I wonder why it is so hot in this time of the year. Thanksgiving does not exist here, I already knew that but had hope that something special would happen. Haha - I ate frosted flakes for dinner. They were grrreat.

This city is actually really cool. Everyone knows each other, because it is so small. We sometimes ask our investigators questions about other investigators and they all know each other. Also did I mention the church building is so beautiful? It really is very beautiful.

Our investigators are great, but a lot aren´t married, and would have to travel to their home country to get the papers to get married. It makes things complicated but it is alright.

This week I learned a lot in my studies. Something that really hit me was Moses 1:39. It is a scripture that everyone knows but I learned a lot from it when I was studying. I love thinking about how it is God's WORK and GLORY to bring to pass the immortality and eternal life of man. God wants us to have exaltation. It is His work, it is what He does, His passion, and I am sure and the scriptures testify that He doesn't do anything that doesn't help us get to that point, living with Him again. It is also His glory, it is what makes Him happy, it is what really brings Him joy and makes Him who He is: God. Knowing that the Godhead is one in purpose, and perfectly unified, it is also the purpose of Christ and the Holy Ghost. I also learned that at some point, in this life or the next, we will have to give up everything to enter into His kingdom. Nothing less is worthy to enter and live with Him. God helps us to do it and works without stop to give us that, but like 2 Nephi chapter 2 teaches, we choose.

I am so happy. I love being here and being a missionary. I know this church is true, I am sure of it. Next week I will include more details... sorry. I love you and miss you all!

A La Región Del Sur

Mi Familia,

This week was a great one!! I love my new area. Ciudad Hidalgo is the most southern area in Mexico. I see Guatemala every day. It is on the other side of a river that you can walk across (not as a missionary of course). It is so beautiful here. The branch is great and the building is beautiful, and we don't share it with anyone, That is something I have never had in my life. My companion Elder Cubillos is great. He goes home December 29th so I am learning a lot from him and what he has experienced, I respect him a lot. He reminds me of Erik Porter soo much, so we get along really good, and it is funny because I know how Erik will be in the mission. It is very hot and that has been the hardest part of the change, a lot hotter than Tuxtla. It also rained on Friday super hard and the whole city floods. We walked in water up to my shin. We heard it was a hurricane that passed but I am not sure to be honest. The people here are great and it is a small town. Everyone knows each other. We do have other parts out of the city but I have only gone to one that’s called La Libertad. It is so much greener than Tuxtla which surprised me. The trip here was great and beautiful.

More about my area, instead of taxi or combi, there are tricycles that people drive around to take you to your destination. It is like Nacho Libre's, but it is just a bike, and there is a bench where the people sit. I will send you a picture so you can have a clearer picture. There are literally a few thousand in this little city. A member drove us on Saturday and it is super fun. I also rode one of our investigator's. In the last 2 years I am the second missionary from the USA here in Ciudad Hidalgo. The other is the missionary who just left, he got sick, and the last one 2 years ago also got sick here. I haven't felt sick here yet but we will see what happens. But its funny because in Tuxtla they are somewhat used to seeing white people and even more used to seeing white Elders, but the people here aren't. They mostly just stare.

We have a lot of great investigators too. We are teaching a woman named Teodora and her son Misael. Teodora paid her tithing on Sunday and Misael goes to seminary every day. We taught the dad yesterday but he works everyday but Sunday so it makes it hard to teach him.

The people are almost all from Central America. It is so cool to meet people from other places. A lot are from El Salvador, Guatemala, and Honduras. They are great people and I love them. They also are having an open house for a temple in Guatemala, and I heard from a few members that is about an hour and a half away. I am so happy because it will be a lot closer than Tuxtla, about 7 hours in bus. The house is pretty and very big, we use about a third of it.

The culture here is much different from Tuxtla, I am already learning new words that aren't said in Tuxtla that they say here, and words that are said in Tuxtla that are not used here. Why is Spanish like that? It makes me wonder how weird I will probably sound to the people in San Diego. All of the Mexican Elders say they speak really weirdly here. Funny.

I am so happy. I love being here and being a missionary. I know this is Christ's true church and he leads it today. It is the same here as it is in all of the world.

I love you and miss you all!

Cuanto Sellares En La Tierra, Sea Sellado En Los Cielos

Mi Familia,

Hey-o. About 3 hours ago they called and I am being transferred! I am going to Ciudad Hidalgo. I am pretty sure it is the most southern area in the mission, and therefore the most southern area in Mexico. It is near Guatemala and the beach. It is super hot I think. I am excited to work there, but sad to leave La Salle. It is seriously such a great ward and I have seen a lot of great changes here. This week 118 people came to church, about double of what it was when I first got here in March. And the ward is just starting to go visiting and home teaching, so I know it is going to grow even more. I hope I can see such progress in Ciudad Hidalgo. My companion is Elder Cubillos. I don't know him but he was in the zone when I first got here. He has 21 months in the mission. I am really excited right now. I leave today at 3:45, and I think it will be about a 6 hour trip.

Well... Emma is getting married on Friday and baptized on Saturday. I am so happy for her. Yesterday I was able to bear testimony to her husband who has a lot of friends and family that tell him things about the church that make him doubt. But he said he was going to pray and ask God if it was the true church. If he gets baptized in these months I might be able to go to their sealing in one year.

Well I have to pack and get ready so I will write you next week with more info. I miss you guys! Also I am super excited that Dad speaks Spanish.

I love you all!!!!

Fortalece Tus Estacas, y Extiende Tus Linderos

Mi Familia,

This week was really good. I am doing great here. On Tuesday and Wednesday a lot of people went to the cemetery to leave flowers and clean off the graves. It is tradition here. I went on exchanges and stayed in an apartment of Elders that live there close. There was so much traffic because they close off one of the busiest streets to sell flowers and other stuff. On Wednesday when a bunch of people go, we contacted and talked to people about the Plan of Salvation. They were very interested and it was a great experience. I also got some skull head candies. I took a picture but the computer didn't recognize my memory today, oh well.

This week Noé got baptized. He is the one that participated in the talent show a few weeks back. He was so happy, and his girlfriend and mom went to the baptism. We are going to start teaching his girlfriend and see if his mom wants to listen to us too. His whole family hides when we come over, but it is normal. The day we met him was a Sunday. We went to pass by the house of a few investigators to bring them to church. No one came and I felt pretty sad. We were in the combi and then when we got to the church Noé got off and asked if we were going to the chapel. The sister missionaries had met him and invited him to church. It made me so happy. I felt like the Lord blessed me for my hard work, even though it wasn't with the people I was working with.

The ward is growing more and more. The members tell us all of the time that they can't believe how hard we are working. I know I shouldn't brag but it makes me feel happy, and that I am actually making a difference. The members have been working with us more and have given us more referrals. The work is going great. This week they called a teacher to teach Gospel Principles. It is one of the biggest classes. It makes me really happy!

Emma is an investigator that I taught my first week of the mission, back in the middle of march. She hasn't been able to get baptized because she is not married. Her kids got baptized almost a year ago. FINALLY she is going to get married the 18th of this month. I am so happy. It is the saturday after changes so we will have to see if I stay more time. It is unlikely but I am not going to rule it out. She is so great. She has had a lot of trials but has such a strong testimony. We are going to work a lot with her husband. He doesn't see the church as something very important.

An older couple, or adult couple rather, got sealed this week. I don't know why but they love me. I don't know them super well. But anyways we were at the church for Noé's interview, and the reception was going on. It hadn't even started but they invited me in a little room to take pictures with them. It made me so happy. They are going to live across the street from us.

I got a Book of Mormon in Tzotzil this week. It isn't complete but it has a lot of chapters nonetheless. I have read a little and it is so sweet. We have the Book of Mormon in so many languages, but still have a long way to go. Here in Chiapas there are 5 main dialects and Tzotzil is the only one with a Book of Mormon, and it isn't complete. We have a long way to go!

We set a baptismal date for the 26th with the mom and daughter of the family Caballero Perez this week (the mom who was crying). The rest weren't home, but I think that they will also get baptized. They are already so much happier. I love to see the gospel help people.

Thanksgiving doesn't really exist here. So we are already seeing the Christmas decorations going up. It is the kind of thing I always wanted as a kid.

Things are good here. I am so happy. The time is going by so fast. Too fast. But I have learned so much. I know the Savior lives and loves us. He made it possible to return and live with our Heavenly Father again, we just have to do our part.

I love you and miss you all.

Dios Os Dará Conocimiento Por Medio De Su Santo Espíritu

Mi Familia,

Thanks for all the letters, this week was full of miracles. I am so happy to be here.

First, I had a great experience on Thursday. We went to teach one of our investigators. She hasn't progressed very much and I know she has a lot of problems, but she hadn't told us what and she didn't want to. She told us that our church wasn't going to solve her problems. As we talked to her I prayed and asked for the Lord's help to help me know what she was dealing with. I had a strong impression to ask her about the family. She told me it did have to do with her family but nothing else. I knew in that moment that it was with her husband. I reluctantly asked hoping not to offend her. She started to cry and told us everything. She is having a really hard time and doesn't know what to do. Her kids are struggling a lot. I was able to show her a picture of our family and of the temple. I bore testimony of the sealing ordinances and promised her she would live with her family without pain someday. It was an amazing experience with prayer because I really had no idea what was going on with her before.

The baptism of Arely and Rocío

We had 2 baptisms this week. Arely and Rocío, a mom and daughter we found knocking on doors. It is amazing to see how much they have progressed. The other woman in the picture is also starting to listen to us. It is the sister of Rocío and daughter of Arely. They have a lot of family members that have told us they are amazed because Arely has always drunk alcohol, and stopped when she started talking to us. That is why Rocío started listening to us and I hope her other children and grandchildren follow in their footsteps.

We had the conference with Elder Tenorio on Saturday. It was so good, and I learned so much from him. He has so much faith and is an amazing servant of the Lord. He talked to us about prayer and tithing. Also a lot about marriage now that I think about it. I got to see a bunch of old Elder friends and we had a great time catching up, but we didn't get mail. Until next transfer!

The baptism of the sister missionaries

Yesterday we received a referral from our Bishop, from a member from another stake. We visited them last night and it is a whole family. One of the sons just started in his drug addiction again and the family is taking it really hard. They completely opened up to us and I already love them so much. We taught them about the atonement and the temple, and I am not sure if I have felt the spirit stronger in a lesson in my life. The mom was crying almost the whole time. She wants us to visit her soon in rehab so we are going to ask for permission to visit him, because his family can't. The mom told us we were angels and she knew we were sent from God. She kept thanking us for being there. They even offered us a coffee and a ride home. We only accepted the ride home.

I am so happy. I know this is Christ's church and He loves us, this is His work.

Bienaventurados Los Que No Vieron Y Creyeron

Mi Familia,

This week was a good one. Very fast, I can't believe how fast time is going.

We were teaching a family of 4 that moved back to their little town in Siltepec. The father, Ubén, has cancer and that is why they were living here in Tuxtla. His wife and 2 kids are so sweet. But they moved back to their town where there are no missionaries nor churches. They we going to get baptized Sunday but they weren't going to get confirmed so we couldn't do it. It makes me so sad but they said they are going to go to church in Tapachula, a city 4 hours away and take the discussions there at the house of a family member. I love them and it was so hard to say bye. Ubén is very sick so I hope he and his family make it to be baptized.

Another investigator, Noé, or Noah, went to church last Sunday and participated in the ward's talent show on Saturday. He is so shy but got up in front of everyone and danced and played in an air band. He is so awesome and so ready for the gospel. I love to see people changing. He is going to get baptized the 5th of November.

It is getting cooler here and not raining. I am so happy and things are just great. This Saturday we are going to have a conference with a member of the 70, I forgot his name but he is Mexican and has glasses, from Veracruz. His last name starts with a T (editor's note: he is Octaviano Tenorio, and was a former president of the Tuxtla Gutierrez mission). But I am so excited and will see some Elders that are in Tuxtla but haven't seen for a while.

Also I have a quote of the week. "It is like Thomas said: I have to see before I believe."

I love you and miss you. I need to pay more attention to the hour because I have to go! Until next week!

El Obrero Es Digno de Su Salario

Mi Familia,

This week was a great one. Haha - we had 110 people at church this week! The ward is really going strong. When I got here we were having 55-65 every week. It is a real miracle to see the progress of the ward. The bishopric is really excited and we are going to keep working.

Definitely Monsoon Season

This week was special because the sisters baptized the niece of Itzelt. A lot of her family come every week to church and I think more are going to get baptized soon. Also another kid I was teaching moved but got baptized in the other ward. It makes me so happy to see that my work has helped more people accept the gospel. Also, Itzelt wants the Temple work done for her father.

Tuxtla Gutierrez

Blanca Estela got baptized this week. She is a very special woman. We met her because we were contacting and found a less active member, we visited him and his family, and they gave us the referral. The members come every week now, and Blanca Estela's life has really changed. She has such a sweet testimony of this gospel and has changed more than any other convert I have seen. She is so much happier now and is very grateful for the the blessings in her life. Her daughters also want to be baptized but work on Sunday, and one lives with her boyfriend. We are going to see what we can do with them.

Blanca Estela's baptism

Ha - oh man the pictures took a while this week, but I am so happy and will write more next week. Hope everyone is good there, I love you all! I know this is Christ's Church.

Él Prueba Su Paciencia y Su Fe

Mi Familia,

Thanks for all of your emails! I feel so loved. I miss you guys a lot.

This week was a great one. Sunday was the best Sunday of my mission. We had 23 nonmembers there (between us and the sisters) and 15 of my converts/less actives that I have reactivated in my time here. It was such a blessing - 83 people were there in total. The members realized how much we are working and virtually every testimony had to do with missionary work. It made me so happy to see that I have helped build the Lord's Kingdom here on the earth.

This week we had some great experiences. We are finding a lot of people that are interested and the area is moving along. I have been trying so hard to have more faith. I read a letter/talk that Elder Haynie gave me before the mission and it talked a lot about faith (written by a mission president.) I know that faith is so important. I know that if we believe that we are going to be able to do something, and it is the Lord's will, it will happen. Elder Nay got sick and we didn’t work on Monday night, and Wednesday every single plan fell through haha. We contacted from 3-9 pm, didn't have one lesson, and didn't sit down once. I was so tired but tried not to let it affect my faith. The rest of the week was full of miracles. Sometimes the Lord tries our faith like that, but when we feel like we can’t do it anymore, that is when the Lord lifts and blesses us. Yesterday we went to the house of one of the families that we contacted Wednesday. They said they couldn't talk because they were doing laundry. We were persistent and the Mom said we could come in if we only talked about the bible, and only for 10 minutes. I felt like President Eyring at that graduation (don’t remember what session). We agreed and I thought we could just talk about the Plan of Salvation using scriptures from the bible. I felt like I could prove it too, and convince them it was true just using the Bible. After we said the prayer I felt a distinct impression from the Holy Spirit that we needed to teach the Restoration. We taught it and I testified of the truthfulness of the Book of Mormon and that Joseph Smith was a prophet of God. It took about an hour and I had used scriptures from the Book of Mormon. I felt bad that I had lied but felt good that I fulfilled my purpose as a missionary. They said we could come back this Wednesday.

We have so many people to teach and not enough time. I don’t know if I have ever had so many investigators. Things are so good and I am so happy. I am so happy Kenny is getting ready to go on a mission. Missionary work is the Lord's work, and He needs more missionaries.

I love you and miss you.

Ambos Son Edificados Y Se Regocijan Juntamente

Mi Familia,

This week was great, and I loved General Conference. It was so good. I got to see every session, the first in Spanish because we brought investigators so we sat with them. But I saw the other 4 in English. First, I am so happy that there is going to be another temple in Provo! The day that the Provo Tabernacle burnt was the day I left BYU to come on the mission, which was a sad day for me. But now P-Town will have a 2 temples right there. ¡Viva Provo! I love the temple and know it is the house of the Lord. I also loved the talk that Elder Holland gave in the Priesthood session. It was my favorite. He put into words a lot of things that I have been feeling here in the mission. I testify that the Lord needs more missionaries, and more worthy missionaries. I also loved the talk by Elder Callister about the Book of Mormon. I know the Book of Mormon is the word of God, because I too have read every page of it, in English and Spanish.

Transfers came and... I am staying! It is my 6th transfer in La Salle. I am so happy to be able to serve here. Some members and converts expressed a lot of love and a few tears were shed this weekend, because they advise us Sunday nights so we still didn’t know during the conference. But I am glad I can stay. Elder Nay is staying with me too which is awesome.

This week was really good. Itzelt's niece announced to us that she is going to get baptized. It made me so happy. The sister missionaries are teaching her, and she will be baptized this Saturday. Her brother in law also had a dream that he got baptized in the church and he wants to start coming with his wife and 9 year old son, who always tells me he wants to be a missionary. I gave him an HLJ ring and am teaching him English. Itzelt also told me she wants me to do the temple work for her father that passed away. It meant a lot to me and I am going to see if I can do it while I am here, if not I sure hope I can return!

Our investigators that came to conference are people we found knocking on doors. The mother, Arely let us in. Two of her daughters (that are already adults with kids) started listening to us because they were so surprised that their mom was listening to us. Supposedly she never listens to missionaries and when she started listening she stopped drinking, something she has done for many, many years. We hadn't even taught the Word of Wisdom but we taught it and she accepted it. They are awesome and I will keep you updated on them over the next few weeks.

Things are really good here, and I love being a missionary. I love being here, and haven't been more happy here. I love this work and rarely think about home. I can't believe how fast time is going and pray for it to slow down. Well thanks for your support and prayers. I love you so much! I testify that Thomas S. Monson is a prophet and the leaders of the church are men chosen by God.

No Cesa de Ser Dios, Y Es Un Dios de Milagros

Mi Familia,

This week was a great one! We worked a lot with the members this week. A while ago while we were walking we stopped to talk to a man who was actually a member, but less active. He said he wanted us to talk to his wife, who I already knew. We talked to her and had one of the best lessons I have had in the mission - we really taught to her needs and I felt like we helped her. Her name is Yadira. Then she told us she wanted us to talk to her husband, and also her neighbor. We talked to her husband another day and were able to talk about the temple a little. They are not sealed and have been members for about 4 years. We also talked to her neighbor. She accepted a baptismal date and her daughter as well. She is so sweet and humble. Her name is Blanca Esetla, and her daughter is Alejandra. Blanca came to church with Yadira, and also brought her handicapped granddaughter. Alejandra didn't come as she had to work. She said she liked church and she wants to go again. I love her a lot and respect her so much for her humility and faith.

"The Sponge" Laundry

We also are teaching another woman named Arely, and two of her daughters who also have children of their own. They are so awesome and they are really interested in the church. They were Seventh Day Adventists. We had a great lesson about the Plan of Salvation and they want to go to the temple to be sealed.

It is so great to be a missionary. I love being able to tell may people where their family members are that have already passed away, giving blessings, helping less actives remember the importance of the church, explaining why bad things happen to good people, calling to repentance, testifying that Jesus lives and loves us, and teaching His gospel to my brothers and sisters. I love seeing the people I teach change, and love being a missionary. I see miracles every day. The time is going by way too fast.

"I Love My Area"

I am so happy to be here. This weekend is cambios (transfers). The ward members keep asking me if I am leaving. Haha - but I hope it is because they love me, and not because they want me to leave. One woman in the ward took a picture with me and Elder Nay last Sunday by the church name plaque where we take pictures for baptisms - haha. I hope I can stay more time because I love this ward and the members. But I will do whatever the Lord says.

I miss you and love you! Thanks for your love and prayers!

El Que Persevere Hasta el Fin, éste Será Salvo

Mi Familia,

Hello! This week was very interesting. There was a conference for all of the Zone Leaders, District Leaders, and Trainers. Elder Nay went and I was with a new Elder from Monday evening to Thursday morning. It was really interesting to work with a new missionary. He is from Mexico so he could speak well but he didn't know a lot of things and it was fun to be able to teach him about the mission. I learned a lot! Then on Friday and Saturday we had exchanges and I was with one of my zone leaders in his area. I barely worked with in the ward this week so I am looking forward to get back to work here in La Salle.

When I was with the new missionary, Elder Perez, we worked in his area one day and our area the other. Both days our last contacts were families that wanted to hear us. It made me think a lot about what would have happened if we would have gone to an appointment early or stopped to take a break. I know it was a blessing. Christ was the perfect example of enduring to the end, because what He did in the last few days of His life gave us the opportunity to live again with Him and our Heavenly Father. What would have happened if he hadn't endured to the very end?

With Elder Torres, my zone leader, we found an excommunicated member that wants to come back to church. He had already talked to the church leaders and has permission to go back to church. He has three daughters that are not members and they are going to start teaching them. Elder Torres is the one that speaks Tzotzil. He contacted some kids in Tzotzil and it reminded me of my first days in the mission when I couldn't understand anything. It is so weird because Spanish is so natural now that sometimes I can't remember if I heard something in English or Spanish - for example, a church talk or quote. I think it is because I just remember what it means and I know how to say it in both languages, but it is super hard for me to speak english now. On wednesday when I was with Elder Perez in a combi some man started talking to me in English. The man made fun of me because I didn't speak very well and kept saying, "come on!" when I messed up or couldn't say a word. He actually spoke a lot worse than me but I didn't tell him that.

Things are good here. We are working hard. I am excited for this week. We are trying really hard to lift the area up and start having some baptisms. Sometimes it is hard to feel successful when you don't see the baptisms coming, but I know that is not how success is measured on the mission. Plus we will be having some soon. I know that it is all happening for a reason.

I know this church is true with all of my heart. I have no doubt that the Book of Mormon is the word of God. I know that Joseph Smith translated it by the power of God. I am so happy to be able to be here and have the chance to share that with other people. I know that if we try our hardest, we can be perfected through the atoning sacrifice of our Savior Jesus Christ, and live with Him again. I know He lives and loves us.

Predicad El Evangelio A Toda Criatura

Mi Familia,

Sounds like everyone had a great week! Thanks for the emails. This week was a good one for me too.

First, the area is dangerous, but the police killed the leader of the main gang here and the rest of them are in jail. I almost contacted them about a week before but felt like I shouldn't. So anyways it is not nearly as dangerous anymore.
Tuxtla Gutierrez

Every night to go home we walk by the house of Itzelt, and one night she told me that her older sisters wanted to come to church. She was so happy and told me that her dream of the temple was coming true. It made me so happy to see that she wants her family to enjoy the gospel. Only one sister came, but in time I know the whole family is going to be listening to the missionaries.

Tuxtla Gutierrez at night

We also started teaching a couple that sells Bonice! Flor, and Edgar. It is awesome, but they are very, very poor. I don't know if I have been more humbled in my life. Their house is about the size of our kitchen/family room. They have 3 kids. The most money they can make in a day is about $20, in total, which rarely happens. They came to church this sunday and they said they liked it. It made me want to cry to think about the sacrifices they made to go, it costs about $2 to go to church and go back in combi, plus they usually work on Sundays. But they have so much faith, and I am just praying for the Lord to pour out blessings upon them. They are not married so we will see what we can do to help them so they can get baptized.

 Elder Stevenson's current zone

We found another family that is awesome too. We contacted them a while ago and we were going to have a lesson with them, but they weren't home. Then we were walking by and the 8 year-old boy stopped us, and told us he wanted us to come in. We walked in and started talking to the Dad. It smelt like smoke in the house. His name is Isaías and he started telling us about his life. He used to drink a lot and didn't work. He started drinking when he was 12 and stopped more than 20 years later. He hasn't drank in 5 months. I was so touched by his desire to change. Then his son asked us how we can help him to stop smoking. We talked about the Word of Wisdom and he is going to stop smoking. They are a great family, but also not married with very little money.

Mark 16:15

Yesterday we went to La Rivera Cerro Hueco, a little development that is kind of far away from everything. Its the kind of place where if you are born there, you live there your whole life. And many of them have not seen white people before, or heard of Mormons. We looked for some references and EVERYONE was Catholic and didn't want to talk to us. It was rough and I felt like Alma and Amulek a little bit.

This week was great. I learned a lot about the commandments, and how we have them to prepare to become like God. We need to obey so that we can learn about that stuff.

I love you and miss you all!!

Mi Alma Se Deleita En Las Escrituras

Mi Familia,

Hello! Things are going great here. It is not raining as much but it rained super hard on Tuesday I think it was. No it was Wednesday. There were rivers in the streets and the water was high. We got soaked but I think it is so funny to get wet in church clothes, because it doesn't bother me and everyone looks at us as we walk by.

This week was good; we found a lot of people that are going to progress. It is hard switching areas because we had to start completely over, so we are working hard to get baptizing again.

This week I learned a lot. I really love studying. I learned a lot about the Priesthood. I wish I could have realized the importance of the Priesthood before I got it, but that is how the Lord works, we learn by experience. I feel a huge responsibility as a priesthood holder, and I am studying and praying so I can understand it better, and really do my duty as a priesthood holder. I feel like I am actually serving the Lord, and trying hard to listen to the spirit in every moment. I love my Savior, Jesus Christ. I testify that he lives and loves us. I am coming to know Him more, here on the mission. He loves us so much and when we put our confidence in Him we cannot fall. What an amazing promise. I know it is true.

I love you and miss you. Expect a better letter next week, sorry!!

Se Realizó Un Gran Cambio En Su Corazón

Mi Familia,

This week was busy! And very different. When I was writing you last week the zone leaders called and told us we would be going to Elder Ward and Day's area, and the Sisters to ours. We had about an hour for Elder Ward to explain to me the area and investigators before they left. This week we did a lot of searching for investigators, and also for a house for the Sisters. We finally found one, but they can’t move in until Thursday, because the owner had to do repairs and doesn't live in Tuxtla. But we are starting to be able to work again.

This week's baptism - Gabriel - 15 years old and a pro soccer player.

Our new area is in the same ward, but the southern part. It is all mountains, and more beautiful. The streets aren't as nice, if you can call them streets! And also we have the most dangerous part of Tuxtla in our area. We have to be out of there by 6. We have already seen some sketchy stuff but I know we will be alright.

Live monkey on the hood - probably not the sketchy stuff he was referring to.

We have a lot of great people we are teaching and I am super happy to be here, but sad to have to leave the other area. I still get to see everyone at church, but don't get to go to their houses and see their progression like I used to, but I know that is just part of the mission.

View from Elder Stevenson's area.

Things are good and I am so happy. I am excited to get back to work. I will have more stories when I am actually working again (haha). I love you all and miss you so much!!

Vuestros Hijos y Vuestras Hijas Profetizarán

Mi Familia,

Cambios came and.... I stay! Elder Nay is staying as well. But we are going to the area of Elder Ward and Elder Day, the other part of our ward. It should be very interesting. Sister missionaries are coming to our old area, not sure how that is going to work because we eat together, have meetings together, etc. It should be interesting.

This week was amazing. I just want to share a story.

Months ago, Itzelt had a dream she was with her family in a beautiful place with all of her family, just together and talking.

In March, an inspired Stake President called our zone leader, to tell him that he wanted 4 missionaries in La Salle. After much work, they added 2 more and divided the area in early April. They were Elder Ward and Elder Castellanos. The first night they had no idea where the house was, but stopped at a house to buy something to eat, the house of Itzelt and her mother, Carmen. They said they wanted to hear more about the missionaries, and they had always called us their "angels." After almost 3 months Elder Tapia and I went to their house. We started teaching them and Itzelt got baptized a month later and shortly after entered the temple. She said it was familiar inside. It was the place she had seen in her dream.

Carmen couldn’t get baptized because she had a commitment with her niece to go to a Christian church. I had invited her to be baptized a few times, for the 20th of August. She said no, not yet, but someday. She even promised me I would baptize her someday.

On thursday we got a call that we can’t play soccer anymore. We did that as an activity with the ward if we had investigators. We decided to go to Itzelt’s home at 8 that night since we couldn’t play. Later we had a man drive up to us and wanted us to come by at 8. We said ok, but when 8 rolled around we went to his house and he wasn’t home. We dropped in on another investigator, but also was not home. We both knew we had to go to Itzelt’s home. Itzelt was looking out the door when we came in. Long story short, a family member died and Carmen said she had been thinking and wanted to get baptized and could, on the 20th. I baptized her and Elder Ward confirmed her yesterday. Elder Ward leaves today for another area.

I know the Lord prepares people for us to teach. I know this church is true and He loves all of His Children.

¿No han de tener respuesta las muchas palabras?

Mi Familia,

Ok - I had a ton of letters today and don’t have much time to write, sorry!!!

I think I am mostly going to answer questions because there are lots!

First, we only get to go to the temple here once, like 2 days before you go home. I have been by it many times and it is beautiful, and everyone has seen it, even though I am on the complete opposite side of Tuxtla. I don't know how many investigators I have right now, but we have a lot. They aren’t home a lot and that has been a problem the last few weeks, we are going to look for new ones. And yes we tract almost every day. We knock on lots of doors, contact in the streets, and combis.

A member made the fish meal. It was really good too! When I make food I usually have a quesadilla, yogurt, cereal, or nutella on bread. Simple things, partly because I am so tired when we eat (in the morning and night) and also we don’t have much time. We don’t have an hour for lunch and dinner, just lunch from 2-3 and we work till 9 after that.

I still wash my own clothes, and I sent a picture of me with all of my white shirts and the bucket I was going to wash them in. It takes a long time and is tiring, but I am pretty good at it. I haven't confirmed anyone yet, because in our ward the members do it. My Spanish is still improving, though my zone leader told me I learned Spanish faster than any other missionary he has seen, and he has 23 months in the mission! He is also Mexican which makes it more valid, I think. I do not translate in my mind, and it is so hard to read/write/speak in English. I have to translate to write home. The ward members compliment me a lot, and the members from other wards always ask me if I am training Elder Nay and think I have 16+ months in the mission. I think that is a good thing!

Ok I have to go but I will write home better next week, I love you all and miss you!!!

Y Descendió La Lluvia, Y Vinieron Los Torrentes

Mi Familia,

Hello! This week was busy with work, and a good one.

First, to answer questions: There are 10 or 12 in the mission and none in the zone, but... The rumor is that sister missionaries will be coming in this transfer to our area. The mission president told someone in our ward that (ha ha). Then I had an interview with him this week and he was asking about the area, if it is dangerous, how long I have been there, etc. Transfers are two weeks from today, I think I am a goner but we will see what happens. And I almost always study in Spanish. The only time I use my English scriptures is to read the bible dictionary or index, it is much more complete in English.

Tanner and Dad are coming home! I can't believe dad's picture, he looks really good. I remember when we came back - that first meal I ate was so good. I hope they had a great time.

Things are going really good here. This week we got a referral from another ward. His name is Gabriel and he is 15. We called him and he told us he wanted to get baptized. We went to his house and he told us that he has been to church and loves it. His best friend is a member of our ward too. It was amazing to see how prepared he was for this message. Gabriel is also a really cool kid. He plays pro soccer and already wants to go on a mission. He is going to get baptized on the 20th of this month.

Yesterday it rained super hard. We were contacting and an 8 year old kid let us in the house. He was so sweet. This kid had me laughing so much. He told us how he was a clown for work so I assumed he worked in the street. There are a ton of people that sell stuff and do shows in the big intersections for money. You can see a bunch in the picture I sent last week, but there are also clowns that juggle and stuff like that. When I asked him if he did he told me no, that people hire him to work in houses and parks or parties. He told me he makes about 1500 pesos a day, more than 100 dollars. I couldn't believe it. But he told me his Dad does it too and I guess they are really successful clowns.

We had another reference from some members of the ward. It is a family of 5. The dad's name is Wilmar, and he is from Colombia. They are so great and they are progressing a lot. The dad is so humble and told us he has been looking for a guide in his life. I couldn't believe how ready he was to hear our message. He and his wife aren't married yet, but they are trying to work that out. His wife is from Honduras and I have no idea if it going to be easy or hard for them to get married. We will see. But when they do they will be all ready to be baptized.

Things are so good here. I have no doubt in my mind that this church is true. I know it is Christ's only church on the earth and that he leads it and is very involved in all of its aspects.

I love you all and miss you!

Tres razones para sonreír ... o quizás tan sólo dos

Mi Familia,

Hello from Tuxtla! This week was a good one.

First I saw the funniest shirt in a store here the other day, it was in English and went a little like this,

3 Reasons to smile.
It's sunshine!
It's holiday!

I wanted to buy it because I think it is the funniest thing in the world, but I didn't. If I see it again I will have to take a picture.

We are working really hard over here! We found new people to teach this week and our investigators are progressing a lot. This week at church almost 100 people came. I think my first week here we had around 40. The ward is growing and it is so fun to be part of the Lord's work. I hope it can continue to grow. One family that we are teaching is awesome. The mom is a member but less active. Her oldest son is a member too but also inactive. We taught them with the Bishop there and they all came to church on Sunday, 6 kids. It was so great to see them there and the ward treated them really well.

Susi got baptized too! It was so exciting. Her family couldn't come but we had so many ward members there. It was so sweet to see the ward there. She has so many friends in the church. She has gone through a lot, but it doesn't stop her from staying strong. She is so strong and I am so happy we had the opportunity to teach her.

We were teaching a woman named Isabel as well and she asked us in the first lesson if we pay tithing in our church. I was a little nervous but told her yes, ha of course. Then when we explained it all to her, we asked if she would pay her tithing after her baptism. She said yes, and asked if she could start paying before too. I was so caught off guard and had no idea what to say. The truth is I still don't know how that works but that really helped me understand the importance of tithing a little more.

We also had a great lesson with Itzelt this week. We talked about the temple and she is so excited to go and do baptisms, she will go this Thursday. We also invited her mom to get baptized, but she said no. She had already promised a family member that she would go to their church, but she looked at me in the eye and said she would someday. I knew she was telling me true, and know she already has a testimony that this gospel is the truth. I tried everything to help her accept until I was begging her to get baptized, because I wanted to be there to see it. She told me that if I get transferred she will go there to be baptized when she can. I love that family so much and they have helped me feel at home here in Tuxtla.

I am so happy to be here! I see miracles everyday. I love the mission so much. I miss you all and love you! I know this church is true.

Meeting Presidente Cárdenas

Mi Familia,

This week was great. I am so happy and just doing great.

Mom, I hope you had a great birthday yesterday! I thought about you a lot and prayed you had a great day. To answer questions, It is hot but I am really used to it. If it is under 85 degrees I get so cold. I sleep fine and the apartment is perfect. I am doing great with money and don't need anything. Today I am going to take out the money you sent me and also an emergency account of $40 that the mission announced we need to have in the house from our own money. For transportation we get 800 pesos, (a month) and this month we are doing good on money.

This week we had zone conference so I finally got to meet Presidente Cárdenas and his family. They are so sweet and loving. I am happy they are here and know that he will receive inspiration for us as missionaries.

We also had a baptism this week for Itzelt. It was one of the most beautiful services I have ever seen. She was so nervous but so happy to get baptized. Her family came and her friend that is a member from another Stake. Her friend gave a talk and just said how she never thought that her friends would accept the gospel. It made me think about my friends and how I never talked about the church with them. Of course now as a missionary I can't think of another thing to talk about with someone. I remember a time at school when a close friend said she would get join the Mormons because she agreed with all of our beliefs and would like to be Mormon. I think told her that that was cool and asked what the homework was for that night. I laugh at how pathetically sad that was.

We are teaching a lot of people and I love them so much. I love being here. My testimony is growing and I am learning so much. I loved something that Presidente told us. He said that Joseph Smith could not have written Doctrine and Covenants 120:20-21. I dwelt on that and knew it was true. I know Joseph Smith was a prophet and could not have made up the things he wrote, they are eternal principles.

I love you and miss you all, have a great week!

Yo sé que vive mi Señor

Mi Familia,

This week was really good! I learned a lot.

Things are good with Elder Nay. He is a really good companion; he really helps me want to be a better missionary. We are working hard here!

This week we were going to have the baptism of Susi, the sister of Roque, but in the morning she called us and told us she got sick. I wasn't really sad, and realized it is because she is still going to get baptized eventually! I care about her and realized it is not about the numbers, not that I ever thought that. We decided that we are going to teach her everything over again, and she is going to get baptized on the 30th of this month. We taught her everything but a long time ago, we are just going to review it and make sure she is really ready.

We started teaching a contact that Elder Tapia and I had. The first lesson she told us she knew it was true. Sometimes I can't believe how sensitive people are to the spirit, and I think about what I would be thinking if I was in their place. We invited her to be baptized but she said she couldn't because her parents wouldn't let her, they are Catholics. I was thinking about it later and got an overwhelming feeling that it was all going to be alright. I am not sure if I will ever see her baptism, but I felt and know that she has accepted this message and will have another opportunity to get baptized.

Another investigator, Itzelt, is doing so good. I have had members ask me if she is a member already because she knows so much and dresses like a member, too. She told Elder Tapia and I that she wanted a Hymn Book because she loves the songs, so we bought one for her and wrote notes in the back. I gave it to her on Saturday and she was so excited and touched. She brought it to church and everything. She is going to be baptized this Saturday.

Things are so good here. I am loving the people more and more. I had a few days where I was thinking about family and friends a lot, but I have been praying for help. I realized that the antidote is love for the people. I started focusing on how much I love my investigators and all the people I have taught and I stopped missing home so much. I feel really happy today. I love being here and teaching these people. They are so amazing to me and I have learned so much from them.

Yesterday we had a stake priesthood meeting. We had almost 200 people there, which is a great turnout. There was a special musical number by some of the young men in the stake, including Nefi, one of the 3 boys Elder Ballard and I baptized. They sang my favorite Hymn, "I Know That My Redeemer Lives." It made me cry so much. I had just found out a few days before that Nefi talked to his mom and is planning to leave on his mission in December 2012, right before I go home. Jared will leave about 2 and a half years after that, and Alejandro, 2 years after Jared. It is amazing to see some of the fruit of what I have done, with the help of the Lord.

I love you all, have a great week!

Prepararse para Comparecer Ante Dios

Mi Familia,

This week was a good one! I cannot believe how fast time is going. And it just keeps going by faster and faster. Another transfer just ended and Elder Tapia got transferred to San Cristobal, the nicest area in the mission as far as weather goes. He is going to be a zone leader, and he is going to be great. It was hard to see him go because we got along really well and we had so much success this transfer. In fact one of the assistants to the President congratulated me and told me to keep up the hard work and even the President mentioned it on the phone to Elder Tapia. I am working hard to have more success this transfer.

My new companion is Elder Nay, from Eugene, Oregon. He is a really good Elder and we got along really well. He has about 10 months in the mission. I think we are going to do a lot of great things here in La Salle. The ward is great and it will be hard to leave them some day. I will have 6 months with them after these short 6 weeks.

Roque got baptized on Friday. I forgot my Camera so I will send pictures another time. It was a great service and a bunch of people came, mostly non-members. He was happy after and told us he felt something special while he was there. Baptisms are so amazing and I still remember how I felt when I got baptized. I know it was the spirit testifying that the baptism is valid, and you could feel a little bit of God's love for us through the spirit.

Mom - Olga, her baby, and Alejandra (the less active family) came to church. The ward was so warm and nice to them, and I knew they were so happy to be there, and I think they are going to keep coming. Also I love how you are sharing the gospel so much. Something that is really important about the people we contact: Be sure to invite them to do something, like come to church or an upcoming activity. It is easier than calling for a Book of Mormon. I always write the address of the church on pass along cards or the little folletos (pamphlets).

This week I really learned the importance of trusting in our Father in Heaven. I was thinking about how this life is the time for us to prepare to meet God. I imagined coming into God's presence, what could I possibly say to Him? That is why it is so important that we have a good relationship with Him here on earth. It will be easy if we have meaningful prayers and really trust Him, and study about Him in the Scriptures. Then we will know Him, know how He is, and just talk to Him like a prayer- like how we always had. That made me realize I can do better in my prayers, and I am working on that right now.

I know this is Christ's true church. There is no doubt in my mind. I know that Christ lives, and through His atonement we will someday be made perfect, like Him and our Heavenly Father. I know my Heavenly Father lives and loves us. I know that we can do all things through them. I know Thomas S. Monson is a prophet of God.

I love you all so much. I miss you but know that before we all know it I will be back at home, most likely up to no good. Just kidding.

Lágrimas de Gozo ante El Señor, Por Causa de Sus Tiernas Misericordias

Mi Familia,

Happy 4th of July! People have been telling me congratulations today, so I just tell them thanks. It is really funny because there are always random fireworks going off here, like seriously every day. I haven't heard one today. But I hope everyone has a great day!

Things are really good here! I cannot believe 6 months are already gone. It went by so fast, I cannot believe it. I am so happy to be here though!

To answer questions, I already have a binder from the MTC, my umbrella is holding up great, we can wear nametags and also we can contact door to door - which we do a lot!

Elder Stevenson and Elder Ward study from The Bible

This week the 3 Montejo boys went to the temple to do baptisms. They said it was great and that they loved it. Alejandro (12) bore his testimony on Sunday and just cried and cried. I might have shed a tear as well. It is so amazing to see people grow testimonies of this gospel. The crazy thing is I feel like I barely do anything, it is all the spirit.

This week we were really busy and walked a lot. One day we were contacting and we finished and were just walking to lunch at a member’s house. Then a man called out, ¡Elderes! We stopped and talked to him. It turns out he isn't the biggest mormon missionary fan and was yelling at us after about 2 minutes. Then their neighbors came out and also called out, ¡Elderes! I was pretty worried and figured some mean missionaries had contacted the street but it was less active members. We talked to them after and said they came out because they heard yelling. We had a lesson with them and I think it helped them a lot - they have a bunch of problems. They didn’t come to church but I think it was because they have no money, but now the ward is going to help them. It reminded me of the Book of Mormon in Alma where it says that the Lord works by many means to help the children of men, or something like that, I don’t remember how it goes in English.

Before the baptism this week

We had a baptism this Saturday and it went very well. Pepe, Rosi, Arturo and Ari got baptized. It was a very special day. They are all doing great.

We had an amazing week and found some new great people. One had been praying for the word of God, another has had problems with life in general and we gave her a Book of Mormon. I love the Book of Mormon, and I know it is the word of God. It really helps us so much in all aspects of life. I know it is scripture and that it contains the fullness of the gospel. I know Joseph Smith translated it by the power of God.

I love you all so much and miss you, take care!!!

Preparar Tus Alimentos Con Sencillez de Corazón

Mi Familia,

This week was a great one. Busy, but great!

This week we got a new Zone Leader, Elder Torres. For all of his mission he has been in the mountains speaking Tzotzil. We went on divisions with him and he taught me some of the language. It was sweet and he is a really great guy.

I love Chiapas!

We had another baptism this Saturday. His name is Omar. He is friends with a member, and that is how he got to know the church. He was so ready to get baptized and wanted to change so much. We only taught him 3 times and then he got baptized. He only had a problem with the word of wisdom, with coffee. When we told him about the word of wisdom, he told us he would stop drinking it. And he did! It reminded me of Doctrine and Covenants 4 when it says "the field is white already to harvest." With a lot of the people we teach you can tell they were prepared before by the Lord.

Elder Stevenson and Elder Tapia with Omar at baptism

This week we found a lot of new people that we are going to teach. I am really excited to get to work with them. Two of them are a brother and sister from Colorado and the girl doesn't speak Spanish. I am going to be teaching most of those lessons!

Also this week some of our investigators made us dinner. They don't have very much money but they made us carne asada and prepared everything so nice for us. They don’t have electricity and we usually read by candlelight at their house. But when we went to eat they hung up flashlights from the ceiling and cleaned the house and invited family over. It was so nice. Their boy Roque cried when his mom told him that we would leave some day, he is 11. I feel like he is one of the people I needed to find when I was here, and we have a special bond. I talked with their great aunt who was there. She told me that aliens came and taught the ancient people of America, "how else would they know so much about space?!" She went on and on. I showed her a picture of Jesus in the Americas and explained what we believe and gave her a Book of Mormon. All in all it was a great time.

View of Tuxtla Gutierrez from Elder Stevenson's area

I am so happy to be here! The time is going by faster and faster, and I am enjoying it here more day by day. The work is so amazing. Even though I miss everyone at home I would rather be here right now. I love it. I know this church is true and that we have a prophet today, Thomas S. Monson. I know that we have the authority through him.

I love you all and miss you!

Descendió la Lluvia, y Vinieron Ríos, y Soplaron Vientos

Mi Familia,

This week was a great one. Sounds like everyone is doing so good. Happy Birthday Alicia and Lauren!

To answer questions: Brooke, I love the Tacos here. There’s a restaurant that delivers tacos called "Rikis." They are so good. They are tacos al pastor and they are super spicy and amazing. We order them for special events like baptisms or when we have cambios. I will miss them. Also chili candy is gross, I hate it. My clothes are holding up very well, especially my shoes. It almost rained every day this week. I love it. Really hard on Saturday too! There’s stairs in the entranceway outside our door and the water flowed down it like a river and came in the house till we put shirts in the crack of the door. I will send pictures soon. It also cools down a little with the rain. Dad, I never thought I would be happier to hear that the Mavs won the championship. Go whoever is playing the Heat! Good job on your presentation and thanks for your hard work. Mom, my Spanish is coming along great. Having a native companion helps a lot. I can see a lot improvement in these short weeks. Talking is rather easy. I have dreamt in Spanish, but most of the time I don’t remember if it was English or Spanish.

Yesterday we had zone conference - that is why I didn't get to email! It was really good but we had to say bye to Presidente and Hermana Velasco. It was so hard. I respect them and love them so much. But they have Facebook, so I will add them when I get home. I got mail too. Thanks to everyone who wrote me! I will try to write back soon.

Angel and Jazmin got baptized on Saturday. It was amazing. Jazmin's mom is a member and came to see it. It was so special. I will send pictures when I can. We taught them about temple marriage yesterday. They committed to get sealed in a year. If I am lucky I will be able to go! I think I would have to be serving in Tuxtla. They are so special. Sunday after church Angel had us help him pay his tithing. They read their scriptures every night together. I love them!

This week I prayed that Pepe would be able to go to church somehow. I prayed for something amazing to happen, like for his work to be destroyed or flooded and other things. He came in on Sunday, and turned out he just quit. He told us he has faith in God and is praying. He will get baptized with his mother the 2nd of July.

Sorry my hour is almost up, I didn’t write much! But those are the highlights.

I love you and miss you all.

No Es Para El Cuerpo Ni Para El Vientre

Mi Familia,

This week was great. And sounds like it was great for you guys too! I love hearing how everyone is doing. I am glad Lauren is feeling well, and it seems like everything is going good.

This week was a great one. We are teaching a lot of people and having a lot of success. We have many investigators with baptismal dates, and we are praying and working that they continue preparing for their baptisms.

This week was really rewarding. The three boys that we baptized about a month ago got the priesthood last week and this Sunday they passed/blessed the sacrament. This week we are going to have a lesson with them at the church while they get interviewed for temple recommends. They will do baptisms for the dead on Thursday. I am so excited for them.

This week’s bad news is that I will never serve in the mountains with the indigenous people here. No white people are allowed in their pueblos. But the good news is I learned a little bit of "Tzotzil", their language. But right now all I can remember is "ok" which means turtle and "mai yu tak in" which means I don't have any money.

We are teaching a woman named Rosi and her son Pepe. Pepe believes in the "Santa Muerte" and his mom really doesn't like it. We have been teaching them, and to be honest, I didn’t have much faith that he would change. We invited them to another wards baptism on Saturday. They came and loved it. Rosi talks about how she wants to be a good example for him and she hopes she follows. After the baptism he told her he wants to change and has talked to his mom about going to an LDS school in Mexico City someday. Rosi is going through a lot of hard things but we were able to talk to her. And she is doing better. I told her how she reminded me of my own mom in the way she always led by example. Rosi came to church Sunday but Pepe had to work. He is looking for a new job so he can come to church and be baptized, he is 15.

Things are really good here, I am so happy. The happiest I have ever been in the mission, and my life. I love serving the Lord. I can’t believe how fast time is going. I hope it slows down but it just keeps speeding up, and I think it is going to continue like that.

Well someone has been smoking in this "internet cafe" for almost the whole time and I am off to teach a lesson about the word of wisdom hahaha. Really. But I love you all so much and miss you!

Levántate, y Toma Tu Lecho y Anda

Mi Familia,

Sounds like this upcoming week will be a great one! I am so excited for Alicia and Tanner's graduations. What a party. It is so crazy to think a year ago I was still in high school. The glory days. Alicia's announcement looks amazing too. It is so awesome how the ward is growing. The ward here is growing too. When I got here there were probably 40-50 people coming and this week we almost had 80. I forget how big the wards are there sometimes!

This week was a fast one. I cannot believe how fast the time goes. Already 5 months! I feel like it has been more like 2.

My new companion is great. He has almost a year in the mission and he is from Neza, Mexico. I think that would have been in Tyler's mission. It was so awesome to get out to work this week. I feel like I am progressing so much faster in all aspects when I am actually out working. We have a lot of great investigators. Ángel and Jazmin are progressing so much. We have had incredible lessons with them. In the last one we taught The Restoration. At the end Elder Tapia asked them if they knew that Joseph Smith was a prophet. Tears came to my eyes as they bore testimony that they knew it was true. I imagined them in the temple in one year being endowed and sealed. I also imagined their 10 month old boy on a mission. They will be baptized the 18th of this month. It is so amazing to see the Gospel of Jesus Christ change others.

We have another family we are teaching too. The parents aren't married so we are focusing mainly on the kids. Their names are Susi, Rolando, and Roque. At first they really only listened because their mom told them to, but in the second lesson they were all laughing, asking me to speak English, and when they let us teach they accepted a baptismal date for the 25th and really felt the spirit.

We had a great experience on Friday. We were contacting and met a woman who had already met with the missionaries 10 years ago. She told us her husband was very sick. None of the doctors know what he has. He has been in bed for 3 months and has almost no energy. I felt prompted to offer a blessing. I did and explained that we have the same authority that Jesus Christ and His apostles had. She let us in. Her husband looked terrible. His arms and legs looked like a little kid's. We gave him a blessing. I did the unción (I can't remember what it's called) and Elder Tapia gave him a beautiful blessing. We talked for a while then gave them a Book of Mormon and set up a return appointment. The woman asked me to write our names in the Book of Mormon. She still remembered the names of the missionaries from 10 years ago, and where they were from. We are going to see them tomorrow.

Things are amazing, I am so happy. Sometimes I miss home but I just realize that this is the only time I will ever have to focus 100% on the Lord. I love this work. I know that Christ lives. I know he speaks with the prophet, President Monson. I know he walks the hallways of his Holy Temples. I know he directs this church. It makes me so happy and gives me so much hope. It is the greatest news ever, and I love sharing it with others.

I love you all and miss you.

Hagamos Con Buen Ánimo Cuanta Cosa Esté a Nuestro Alcance

Mi Familia,

Thanks for all of the letters! It was so fun to read about everything that is going on.

Congrats to Natalie with her clogging! That is so exciting that she got 1st at nationals. I am so proud. Congrats to Alicia and her scholarship! That is so exciting that she is getting so much money. Prom looks like it was so fun! Congrats to Nick for his mission call, too! I love thinking about the people I know on missions and just know that we are working together for the same cause. Nick will be here soon! And congrats Mom and Dad for 24 years of marriage! That's a great streak, keep it up. And also for getting to work in the temple! That is something I want to do when I grow up.

Transfers came late! They usually come Saturday but they came late last night. Elder Ballard is going to the other side of Tuxtla. I imagine it is because he still needs to see a doctor; he has been in Tuxtla his whole mission. I am staying here and my new companion is Elder Tapia. He has about a year and is coming from the mission offices being the secretary of the mission. He took us to immigration and stuff so I know him and he is a really good missionary! He is a native, I think from Mexico City, but I can't remember for sure. I am sad Elder Ballard is leaving but am excited for Elder Tapia to come and to get to work.

This week went really well. We got to work a lot, well more than usual. It started raining this week, exciting! Still hot though.

About a month ago a man stopped us in the street and asked where the closest chapel was. We told him (Ángel) and he came with his wife, Jazmin and their baby. We just found their house and visited them on Saturday. It went so good. I felt strongly that we needed to invite them to be baptized. You will not believe all of the distractions that happened once I decided we needed to do it. First, the laundry machine pipe started spraying everywhere. They fixed it, and we were teaching. Then the baby was really fussy so they put him to bed. Then he started crying so the mom left and then the phone rang and Elder Ballard left, because we thought it was the transfers coming in. It was just me and Ángel - I felt prompted to ask him if he had any doubts or something, I don't even remember what I said. He told me he felt like a good person but just wanted to be better. I started teaching him about the Doctrine of Christ. Elder Ballard and Jazmin came back. Then it started raining, and we were out by the balcony, getting all wet. We moved away from the opening and kept teaching. Then the lights went out. I couldn't believe everything that was going on. I felt like it was the adversary trying to stop us. The lights went back on, and the baby started crying about a minute later. I couldn't believe it. It was like a movie. Jazmin brought the baby in and we finished teaching, and invited them to be baptized. They accepted a date for the 18th of June. It was such a crazy experience, they are special people and I know the Lord will help them prepare to be baptized no matter what happens!

I am so happy. I am learning so much. I sometimes forget how I used to be before the mission, or that I wasn't a missionary about 5 months ago. But as I look back I can see that I have grown so much. I have learned so much, more than I can explain. I feel like I am growing up, in the gospel. My testimony has grown so much. I know that Christ lives and that He loves us. I know this is his church.

I love you and miss you!

Aunque Esté Muerto, Vivirá

Mi Familia,

Sounds like everyone is doing well! I love thinking about Philmont and the good times I had there. That was almost 2 years ago! It is crazy how fast time goes. Congrats to Tanner and Natalie with band! I am so glad to hear all is going well. This week was a great one for me too.

Elder Cook came Monday for an all mission conference. It was absolutely amazing. Elder Hoyos from the 70 and his wife also came. When Elder Cook first arrived we all shook his hand and his wife's. I tried to button up my suit coat while I was waiting in line but I couldn't do it in time because I was so nervous and shaky. When I shook his hand I didn't even say anything, I just looked at him. Then he said, "Elder Stevenson, where are you from?"  I said "San Diego, California." Then I shook his wife's hand, and sat back down. It was so funny. It was a great first experience with an apostle of the Lord.

Elder Cook talked to us about Preach My Gospel, and how important it is. He said he helped write it, even though he felt they really just received it from heaven. He told us also that something we don't teach very well is about Joseph Smith. We do well with the story and all, but an important point that we miss is that he was preordained to be the prophet before he was born, and preordained to restore the church of Jesus Christ. That really impacted me, and I know it is the truth! I am going to teach that better. At the end he gave us an Apostolic Blessing. He told us that he knows that we have loved ones at home who are struggling, with jobs, health, and everything! He promised us that they would be blessed for our service. The spirit was so strong and I was sobbing like a baby. I know he is an apostle of the Lord.

Tuesday was p-day, and we had permission to write home on Monday. But anyways our zone went to the zoo! It was fun. There were so many animals and cool things to see. There were actually about the same amount animals outside of cages just walking around as there were inside. But none of that stopped all of the other guests from staring at us missionaries more than anything else. I took a lot of pictures, but left my camera in the apartment just now. I will send more pictures soon.

Elder Ballard and I went to a new doctor this week, I think he's our 5th or something. This guy seemed good though. He is taking new medication and I think he will be getting better soon. But we have transfers this upcoming Monday and it is pretty unlikely we will stay together. I am sad about that because he is such a good companion! I will let you know what happens next week.

We haven't had the opportunity to work much this week but I am still studying hard and trying my best to use my time effectively. Something that Presidente Velasco told me in an interview to do is to study and work on one Christ-like Attribute from chapter 6 in Preach My Gospel every month. It has been amazing. I am working on hope right now and I have learned so much about it. It is really what brings joy in this life and eternal life in the life to come.

One cool experience: We were going to a doctor’s appointment for Elder Ballard in a taxi and we just started talking to the taxi driver. He really warmed up to us. Then about half way there someone called and told him his aunt had died. I felt so bad for him. He stopped talking and just looked so sad. We tried to console him. We were able to give him the Plan of Salvation pamphlet and I bore my testimony that it was true and that he could see his aunt again. It was such an amazing experience. He seemed grateful and I hope we helped him.

I love you and miss you! Thanks for all of your support and prayers!

Persistid en la Oración a Él

Mi Familia,

This week was a great one! And I remembered I have my cord for my camera so I am sending pictures from the baptism, I hope they work! I will be better about sending pictures.

Talking on the phone was so fun on Monday! I haven't felt distracted since. It was really fun and uplifting! It was so special to talk to everyone. Can't wait to talk on Christmas!

Elder Ballard had his colonoscopy Tuesday. Everything looks good apparently, even though he still has a lot of stomach pain. Presidente Velasco said we will be going to a different doctor this coming week if he is still having problems

So we had the mission conference and I got my mail! I had over 30 letters and the package. So fun! Thanks! It was fun to read the letters. It is funny because I only got a few written ones, and they are all about me finally going to Mexico! So I think it takes a while for them to get here.

The baptism was so good. We unlocked everything and were ready to go Friday night when the boys got their interview. Then Saturday the door where you turn on the faucet for the font was locked and we had to call to get help so we could start filling the font! It started late but everyone came late too, so it worked well. In fact, their dad wasn't going to come, so Elder Ballard and I were praying that he would, and he did! When the mom and sister arrived they didn't even know he was there. It was truly a miracle. There were 40 people there - amazing because we have about 50 people at sacrament meeting every week. There were 7-8 non-member extended family members that live in our area. We are going to teach them too, very soon! We gave talks too, I spoke on the Holy Ghost and Elder Ballard talked about the Atonement. Then we had the baptisms! Obispo Nefi baptized Alejandro (11), I baptized Jared (14), and Elder Ballard baptized Nefi (16). It went really great and they were all happy. The dad gave them all hugs and looked very happy. They were confirmed yesterday and their Mom and sister came to church. I don't think they had come for 12 years. We are hoping they start coming again. It was a great weekend.

We are having the mission conference today with Elder Cook. I am so excited!! I will let you know how it goes next week.

This week I learned so much. First, that prayer is so powerful. It is literally the communication between God and man. I also learned that it is really the best protection against Satan and temptations. We can ask for that strength and it will be given to us, just as it is promised so many times in the scriptures! I also learned more about becoming like Christ. Really that is the goal of this life. Chapter 6 in PMG is all about that. In my opinion, that is the most important chapter of Preach My Gospel. I am using the last page to try to improve as a person and missionary. Improvement is essential. If we are always improving, we will have nothing to worry about in the life to come.

I know this church is true. I love you and miss you all! Can't wait to hear from you all again.

Con Amor,

Elder Riley Stevenson
